Werribee began in the 1850s as a farming township called Wyndham, grew up around the railway station that opened in 1857, and took the name of its river, from a Wathawurrung word meaning backbone or spine. It is the administrative centre of the City of Wyndham, home to Werribee Park, the Victoria State Rose Garden and the Open Range Zoo, and has grown rapidly since the 1990s into new estates around the older town. That mix means Werribee decks range from replacements on homes that are fifty or more years old to first decks on brand-new houses. Peak Decking builds, replaces and restores decks across Werribee, with stumps sized to a soil test, stainless fixings and finishes suited to the western plains.

Werribee's older and newer homes suit different boards. Three types cover most decks here.
Merbau is a classic red-brown hardwood that suits the brick homes of Werribee's older streets. It is hard, stable and durable, and needs oiling to keep its colour in the sun. New merbau bleeds tannin in its first rains, so run-off is directed away from paving and render.
Spotted gum and blackbutt are hard Australian hardwoods in lighter, varied tones. They are very durable, bleed less tannin than merbau and suit owners who want a natural deck in a paler colour that stays cooler underfoot. Both are classed as bushfire-resisting timbers, and both are grown in Australia, which some owners prefer to imported merbau.
Composite decking needs no oiling, will not splinter and resists fading, which suits the newer estates and owners replacing an old deck that needed constant care. Capped boards resist stains on an outdoor dining deck, and lighter colours stay cooler in the afternoon sun. A composite deck only needs a wash with soapy water a couple of times a year.
Many Werribee decks, especially in the older parts of town, were built decades ago and are reaching the end of their life.
Rot through the bearers and joists, timber stumps that have rotted at ground level, a deck that bounces or slopes, and soft boards across large areas are signs replacement is better value than patching. Where the frame is mostly sound, a repair may be enough. See deck repairs.
Older Werribee homes often have a small front porch or a tired timber verandah floor. A new front deck, under the existing roof or a new one, gives a dry, welcoming entry and lifts the look of the house from the street. It is set just below the door sill, with broad steps down to the path.
Whether replacing an old deck or building on a newer home, a new deck is installed from the ground up: the soil is tested, footings and galvanised steel stumps are set, bearers and joists are levelled, and boards are laid and fixed with stainless screws. The layout can be changed at the same time, so the deck finishes level with the door, is wide enough for a table, or wraps around to a side area.

At the back of the house, three designs suit Werribee homes old and new.
A deck at floor level off the family room or kitchen creates a level outdoor area for meals and gatherings. On newer homes with an alfresco slab, the deck is built level with the slab so the two read as one floor. See alfresco decks.
An open deck gets hot in summer sun. A pergola or a Colorbond, clear or insulated roof over part of the deck gives shade and rain cover, and is designed and permitted together with the deck so the posts and footings suit both.
A composite or hardwood deck around a pool gives a cool, non-splinter surface, designed so it does not create a foothold within the pool barrier. Where the yard falls away toward the river flats, a raised deck with a balustrade keeps the outdoor area level with the house. See pool decking and elevated decks.
Werribee sits on the western basalt plains along the Werribee River. Laverton RAAF, the nearest long-record Bureau of Meteorology station, records the conditions that shape every deck here.
The plains carry reactive clay that shrinks in dry summers and swells in wet winters, which is why many older decks with timber stumps have sunk or tilted. A soil test sets the AS 2870 site class, and galvanised steel stumps sit on concrete footings sized and set to the depth that class needs.
Laverton RAAF records about 8.5 hours of sun a day in January and a mean afternoon wind of 21 km/h across the year, rising to 23.5 km/h in December. Sun and wind dry and grey timber fast, so timber decks are oiled on every face with a UV-protecting oil and usually re-oiled every six to twelve months in full sun.
Older decks often used plain steel nails and screws that rust, stain the boards and work loose. New decks use stainless steel screws in pre-drilled holes, boards are laid with correct gaps, and air is kept moving under the deck so the boards dry evenly and stay flat.

Many older Werribee decks can be saved with the right repairs and a fresh finish.
Sunken or rotted stumps are replaced with galvanised steel stumps on new footings, and the deck is jacked back to level. Rotted or split boards are swapped for matching timber, loose boards are re-fixed with stainless screws, and wobbly railings are re-fixed or replaced.
A grey, rough timber deck can be cleaned, sanded and oiled or stained to bring back its colour once repairs are done. In full sun, re-oiling every six to twelve months keeps it protected. See deck restoration and oiling.
Every job is priced from a free measure and a written, itemised quote. As a guide, treated pine is the most economical new deck, merbau sits in the middle, and spotted gum and composite cost more. Removing an old deck, restumping, a roof, balustrades and raised designs are each listed on their own line, along with the building permit where one is needed.
Deck builders near you in Werribee should understand both the older homes and the newer estates. Peak Decking measures every home before drawing anything and quotes in writing with every item listed.
The free measure records the door sill and slab heights, the fall of the yard, the condition of any existing deck, the distance to each boundary and where stormwater can go. The deck is drawn to those numbers, so it sits level with the house and drains away from it.
Most decks need a building permit, and a deck more than 800 mm above ground can need a planning permit on a lot under 300 square metres or where an overlay applies, such as heritage controls on some older properties. These are checked first and the permit is lodged as part of the job. See deck permits.

Peak Decking covers all of Werribee, from the river and the town centre out to the newest estates. A free measure can be booked for any address in the suburb.
The older streets near the Werribee River and toward Werribee Park hold many of the town's established homes, some on larger blocks. Deck replacement, front decks, restumping and full restorations are the most common jobs here. Larger blocks leave room for a wraparound deck or a separate deck down the garden.
Near Werribee station and the town centre, where newer apartments and townhouses now sit alongside older houses, compact composite decks, courtyard decks and privacy screens toward close neighbours suit smaller yards. See deck privacy screens.
Werribee's growth since the 1990s has added estates of family homes on the edges of the older town. First decks level with the alfresco slab, often with a roof over the dining end and composite boards, are popular on these homes.

decking In Werribee
The cost depends on the size, the boards and whether an old deck has to be removed. Treated pine is the most economical and composite the most expensive. A free measure gives a written, itemised quote.
If rot runs through the frame or stumps have failed across the deck, replacement is usually better value. If the frame is sound, repairs and a restoration are often enough.
Yes. A front deck is set just below the door sill with broad steps to the path, under the existing roof or a new one.
Most decks need a building permit. A deck over 800 mm high can also need a planning permit on a small lot or where an overlay applies.
Usually because timber stumps have rotted or moved with the reactive clay. Restumping on new footings brings it back to level.
Peak Decking covers Werribee, Werribee South, Hoppers Crossing, Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes and the rest of Wyndham. A free measure can be booked for any address in the area.
